The present invention discloses a novel Polymer-Dispersed Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Display (PDF LCD). The active matrix LCD such as a TFT LCD, the solution of low response speed of nematic LCD, requires very high production costs. And the FLCD utilizing ferroelectric liquid crystal exhibits highly rapid response speed, but results in an unstable structure, difficult fabrication, and incompetency of expressing gray scales. Meanwhile, the PD LCD exhibits a simple structure, wide viewing angle and high strength, but low contrast thereof disqualifies it for the image display. The present invention combines the PD LCD and FLCD that is dispersing droplets of ferroelectric liquid crystal in a polymer matrix to compensate merits and dismerits of them. As the result, there is provided a novel PDF LCD having very rapid response speed, toughness to external shock or heat, and high contrast. Moreover, the present PDF LCD does not exhibit bistable characteristics to be able to express gray scales, and thus it is suitable for fabricating large area color image display.

La présente invention concerne un nouvel afficheur à cristaux liquides ferroélectriques dispersés dans un polymère. L'afficheur à cristaux liquides à matrice active, tel qu'un afficheur à cristaux liquides à transistor en couches minces, solution à faible vitesse de réponse des afficheurs à cristaux nématiques, entraîne des coûts de production très importants. De plus, l'afficheur à cristaux liquides ferroélectriques utilisant des cristaux liquides ferroélectriques présente une vitesse de réponse élevée, mais se traduit par une structure instable, difficile à fabriquer et exprimant difficilement les échelles de gris. En revanche, l'afficheur à cristaux liquides dispersés dans un polymère est une structure simple, avec un large angle de visualisation et une forte résistance, mais son faible contraste nuit à l'affichage de l'image. La présente invention combine l'afficheur à cristaux liquides dispersés dans un polymère et un afficheur à cristaux liquides ferroélectriques par le fait que des gouttelettes de cristaux liquides ferroélectriques sont dispersées dans une matrice de polymère pour compenser leurs avantages et leurs inconvénients. Par conséquent, on obtient un nouvel afficheur à cristaux liquides ferroélectriques dispsersées dans un polymère, présentant une vitesse de réponse ultra-rapide, une grande résistance aux chocs externes et à la chaleur et un fort contraste. De plus, l'afficheur à cristaux liquides ferroélectriques dispersées dans un polymère ne présente pas de caractéristiques bistables permettant d'exprimer les échelles de gris, et convient ainsi pour la fabrication d'un afficheur d'images en couleurs de surface importante.
