According to the invention, gas torque (Cg) is determined for each cylinder combustion, engine speed (N) and air admission manifold pressure are measured during the corresponding prior admission phase, a reference torque (Cref), which is a function of N and Pca, is cartographically calculated by interpolation, the reference torque Cref, for example, is corrected by multiplication with a coefficient (KM) associated with the corresponding cylinder in a stabilized engine operating mode; in transient mode, an additive correction (KA) is also made to derive the expected theoretical torque (Cpr) which is compared with the gas torque (Cg) so as to determine that misfire has occured if Cpr/Cg > S2, where S2 is a threshold value. The process and device of the invention are suitable for generating signals representative of engine operation or indicating that the threshold level of harmful components discharged into the exhaust gases is exceeded.

Selon l'invention, on détermine le couple gaz (Cg) pour chaque combustion dans chaque cylindre, on mesure le régime (N) du moteur et la pression (Pca) au collecteur d'admission d'air pendant la phase d'admission antérieure correspondante, on calcule par interpolation dans une cartographie un couple de référence (Cref) fonction de N et de Pca, on corrige par exemple Cref par produit avec un coefficient (KM) associé au cylindre correspondant en mode de fonctionnement stabilisé du moteur, et, en transitoire, on effectue de plus une correction additive (KA), pour en déduire un couple théorique prévu (Cpr) que l'on compare au couple gaz (Cg) pour considérer qu'il y a un raté de combustion si Cpr/Cg > S2, où S2 est un seuil. Application à l'émission de signaux de diagnostic du fonctionnement du moteur et/ou de dépassement de seuil d'émission de composants nocifs dans les gaz d'échappement.
