The linear actuator comprises an output shaft (4) having a pair of driven wheels (6, 8), one (8) being rotatable thereon in a fixed plane and having a drive nut (9) for an associated thread (11) on said output shaft and the other (6) being rotatably fixed (6A) to said output shaft, an input shaft (2) alongside the output shaft which is rotated by a suitable power source (3) and a drive wheel (5, 7) for each driven wheel rotatably fixed on said input shaft, the ratio between each drive and driven wheel set being chosen to rotate the driven wheels at different speeds in the same rotational direction to produce axial movement of said output shaft in a direction depending upon relative rotation of the driven wheels. In accordance with the invention the fixed driven wheel (6) and drive wheel (5) are meshing helical gear wheels, and a fail-safe arrangement is provided comprising a clutch (27, 29) between the drive wheels (5, 7) of the input shaft, a back-drive (9, 11) for said output shaft, and biasing means (22) for effecting a back-drive. In operation the meshing helical gears impart an axial force to engage the clutch only while power is supplied, the biasing means being operative to back-drive the output shaft to a fail-safe position when the power is terminated. The actuator can be readily modified to be operated by a remote operating vehicle (ROV) in undersea applications.

L'actionneur linéaire présenté comprend un arbre de sortie (4) pourvu d'une paire de roues entraînées (6, 8), une (8) de ces roues pouvant tourner sur cet arbre dans un plan fixe et étant pourvue d'un écrou de commande (9) fonctionnant avec un filetage associé (11) dudit arbre de sortie, et l'autre (6) de ces roues étant montée solidaire en rotation (6A) sur ledit arbre de sortie. Ledit actionneur comprend également un arbre d'entrée (2), parallèle à l'arbre de sortie, qui est entraîné en rotation par une source de puissance (3) adéquate, ainsi que des roues d'entraînement (5, 7) destinées, respectivement, à chaque roue entraînée, montée solidaire en rotation sur l'arbre d'entrée, le rapport entre chaque roue d'entraînement et chaque roue entraînée pouvant être sélectionné de façon que les roues entraînées tournent à des vitesses différentes, dans le même sens, pour produire un déplacement axial dudit arbre de sortie, dans un sens dépendant de la rotation relative des roues entraînées. Selon l'invention, la roue entraînée (6) et la roue d'entraînement (5), montées solidaires en rotation sur leur arbre respectif, sont des roues à denture hélicoïdale qui s'engrènent, et ledit actionneur comprend un dispositif de sécurité qui comporte un embrayage (27, 29) placé entre les roues d'entraîmement (5, 7) de l'arbre d'entrée, un dispositif de rappel (9, 11) destiné audit arbre de sortie, et un moyen de poussée (22) qui produit le mouvement de rappel. Pendant le fonctionnement de l'actionneur, les roues à denture hélicoïdale qui s'engrènent exercent une force axiale qui permet l'engagement de l'embrayage seulement lorsqu'il y a un apport d'énergie, ledit moyen de sollicitation entrant en fonction pour amener l'arbre de sortie à une position de sécurité lorsqu'il n'y a plus d'apport d'énergie. L'actionneur peut être facilement modifié de façon à pouvoir être actionné par un véhicule télécommandé, pour effectuer des opérations sous-marines.
