An engine compression braking system (10) for a multicylinder engine having a plurality of hydraulically operated exhaust valve actuators (44, 46, 48, 50), one for each respective cylinder exhaust valve. A hydraulically operated braking control valve (14) is operatively coupled to each of the exhaust valve actuators (44, 46, 48, 50) to in turn simultaneously open each associated exhaust valve. Selective fluid coupling and decoupling of hydraulic operating lines to the braking control valve (14) enables a spool valve element (56) to effectively float between an operating end point and a return end point to prevent the spool valve element (56) from undesirably impacting the end point stops. The engine braking horsepower can be varied by timing the simultaneous opening of the exhaust valves and the duration of the opening.

Système de freinage moteur par compression (10) conçu pour un moteur à cylindres multiples possédant une pluralité d'organes de commande hydrauliques (44, 46, 48, 50) de soupapes d'échappement, un organe de commande correspondant à chaque soupape d'échappement respective d'un cylindre. Une soupape de commande hydraulique de freinage (14) est accouplée à chacun des organes de commande (44, 46, 48, 50) des soupapes d'échappement, afin d'ouvrir à son tour simultanément chaque soupape d'échappement associée. Le branchement et la coupure sélectifs de conduits hydrauliques raccordés à la soupape de commande de freinage (14) permettent à un élément de soupape à tiroir cylindrique (56) de flotter entre un point d'extrémité opérationnel et un point d'extrémité de retour, afin d'empêcher ledit élément (56) de venir heurter les butées d'extrémité. On peut modifier la puissance du moteur par réglage de l'ouverture simultanée des soupapes d'échappement et de la durée de l'ouverture.
