Abstract

An aggregated synthetic hydrotalcite having a substantially spheroidal shape and an average diameter of up to about 60 $g(m)m is disclosed. The aggregates are composed of individual platy particles having plate diameters of from about 0.05 to about 10$g(m)m. The material has a low tapped density, a high pore volume and a high specific surface area. A process for producing the product is also disclosed. Product particle size is determined by controlling process parameters including reaction temperature and pH, stirring speed of the reaction mixture, and reactant addition rates and concentrations, including aqueous solutions of soluble magnesium and aluminum salts, which are mixed in a molar ratio from about 2.5:1 to 4:1, and a basic solution containing excess carbonate and base to maintain the reaction mixture at a pH of from about 8.5 to about 9.5.

On décrit une hydrotalcite agrégée de forme sensiblement sphéroïdale à diamètre moyen allant jusqu'à 60 $g(m)m environ. Les agrégats se composent de particules séparées en plaquettes dont les diamètres varient entre 0,05 et 10 $g(m)m environ. Ce matériau présente une faible masse volumique tassée, un volume de pore important et une surface active spécifique élevée. On décrit aussi un procédé permettant d'obtenir ce produit. La taille de ses particules est déterminée par la maîtrise des paramètres de processus, y compris la température et le pH de réaction, la vitesse d'agitation du mélange de réaction et les cadences et concentrations d'adjonction de réactifs comprenant des solutions aqueuses de magnésium et de sels d'aluminium solubles, qui sont mélangés selon un rapport molaire allant de 2,5 à 4:1 environ, et une solution basique contenant un carbonate et une base excédentaires pour maintenir le pH du mélange de réaction entre 8,5 et 9,5 environ.
