The present invention provides for faster and stronger tissue-implant bonding by treating a ceramic implant with an ion beam to modify the surface of the ceramic. The surface modification can give the ceramic improved ion-exchange properties depending upon the particular ceramic and the type of ions used. In a preferred embodiment, a bioactive ceramic orthopaedic, dental, or soft tissue implant is bombarded with a beam of cations. When implanted in the body, the surface modification causes an increase in the release of critical ions, such as calcium or phosphorus, from the surface of the ceramic implant, and thereby accelerates implant-tissue bond formation. The mechanism and rate of the ion-exchange reaction, and the type and quantity of ions released by the ceramic, can be controlled by: (a) varying the depth to which the ions penetrate by varying the energy of ion bombardment or the angle of the ceramic surface related to the ion beam; (b) varying the fluence (or ions per unit area) of the ion beam; and (c) varying the type and combination of ions used.

La présente invention concerne l'accélération et le renforcement de la liaison implant-tissu par traitement de l'implant céramique au moyen d'un faisceau ionique qui modifie la surface de céramique. La modification de surface permet d'obtenir une amélioration des caractéristiques d'échange ionique de la céramique suivant la céramique concernée et le type d'ions utilisés. Dans une réalisation préférée, l'implant en céramique bioactive pour l'orthopédie, la dentisterie ou les tissus mous est bombardé au moyen d'un faisceau de cations. Après implantation dans le corps, la modification de surface provoque un accroissement de dégagement d'ions critiques, de calcium ou de phosphore par exemple, en provenance de la surface de l'implant céramique, ce qui accélère la constitution de la liaison implant-tissu. Il est possible de contrôler le procédé et la rapidité de la réaction d'échange ionique ainsi que le type et la quantité d'ions dégagés par la céramique: (a) en intervenant sur la profondeur de pénétration ionique par modification de l'énergie de bombardement ionique ou de l'angle formé entre la surface de céramique et le faisceau d'ions; (b) en intervenant au niveau de la fluence du faisceau d'ions (c'est à dire la quantité d'ions par surface unitaire); et (c) en intervenant au niveau du type et de la combinaison des ions utilisés.
