A hierarchical communication system (30), arranged in a spanning tree configuration, is described in which wired and wireless communication networks (37, 40, 41) exhibiting substantially different characteristics are employed in an overall scheme to link portable or mobile computing devices (35, 36). Copies of data, program code and processing resources are migrated from their source toward requesting destinations based on request frequency, communication link costs and available local storage and/or processing resources. Each appropriately configured network device (33, 35, 36) acts as an active participant in network migration. In addition, portable two dimensional (2-D) code reading terminals (43, 44, 45) are configured to wirelessly communicate compressed 2-D images towards stationary access servers (33) that identify the code image through decoding and through comparison with a database of images that have previously been decoded and stored.

Système de télécommunications (30) en arbre maximal dans lequel des réseaux (37, 40, 41) de communication par fil ou sans fil présentant des caractéristiques sensiblement différentes font partie d'un schèma général de liaisons entre des ordinateurs portables et mobiles (35, 36). Des copies des données, du code de programmation et des resources de traitement sont acheminées depuis leur source vers les destinations requérantes sur la base de la fréquence demandée, du coût de la liaison et des resources locales de stockage et/ou de traitement disponsibles. Chacun des éléments de réseau de configuration appropriée (33, 35, 36) joue un rôle actif dans le cheminement à travers les réseaux. De plus, des terminaux (43, 44, 45) portables de lecture des codes bidimentionnels (2-D) sont conçus pour pouvoir transmettre des images 2-D comprimées vers des serveurs d'accès stationnaire (33) qui identifient l'image du code par décodage et comparaison avec une banque de données d'images préalablement décodées et stockées.
