An apparatus and method for measuring the caliper of papermaking fabric (P) in a non-contacting manner on a papermaking machine is disclosed wherein a displacement meter unit (B) supported on a stand (40) adjacent a run of the papermaking fabric (P) in such a manner that the pair of opposed displacement meters (78, 80), may be aligned perpendicular to the opposing fabric surfaces for measuring their displacement. First and second displacement signals (88, 90) are generated which are processed to, provide a caliper signal representing the thickness of the fabric (P) which can be used to indicate its condition for dewatering performance. A universal coupling (48) mounts the displacement meter unit (B) on the stand (40) so that the apparatus may be aligned for different inclinations of fabric runs.

Dispositif et procédé servant à effectuer la mesure sans contact de l'épaisseur d'une toile (P) de machine à fabriquer le papier et consistant à utiliser un ensemble de mesure de déplacement (B) supporté par un pied (40) en position contiguë au défilement de la toile (P), de telle manière que la paire d'éléments de mesure opposés (78, 80) peut s'aligner perpendiculairement par rapport aux surfaces opposées de la toile, afin de mesurer leur déplacement. Un premier et un deuxième signal de déplacement (88, 90) sont émis et traités, de manière à obtenir un signal représentant l'épaisseur de la toile (P), qu'on peut utiliser, afin d'indiquer la capacité de suppression d'eau de ladite toile. Un joint universel (48) permet de monter l'ensemble de mesure de déplacement (B) sur le pied (40), afin de pouvoir aligner le dispositif sur différentes inclinaisons de défilement de la toile.
