Curable optical fiber cladding compositions that exhibit improved optical, mechanical, adhesive and moisture barrier properties are prepared from a 100 % reactive composition of monofunctional and multi-functional monomers. The preferred components of these compositions are polymers and copolymers of fluorine-containing monofunctional acrylate or methacrylate monomer(s), such polymers being soluble and dissolved in a fluorocarbon acrylate or methacrylate monomer or monomers, but not necessarily those of the base polymer. The preferred cladding compositions may be prepared with or without a cross-linking monomer such as a di-functional or poly-functional acrylate or methacrylate. The claddings may also use a thermal or photoinitiator or other known polymerization initiating system and an adhesion promoter or promoters, such as acrylic or methacrylic acid, a silanol acrylate, methacrylate, alkoxysilane acrylate or methacrylate, or an alkoxy vinyl silane, aryl acrylate of methacrylate. When polymerized, the disclosed, optically clear inter-polymer compositions present a broad spectrum of physical properties. These physical characteristics may range from rigid to elastomeric thermoplastic compositions to rigid to elastomeric, infusible, cross-linked compositions.

On prépare à partir d'une composition réactive à 100 % à base de monomères monofonctionnels et multifonctionnels des compositions susceptibles de cuisson et destinées au placage de fibres optiques et possédant des propriétés optiques, mécaniques, adhésives et de barrière à l'humidité qui sont améliorées. Les constituants préférés de ces compositions sont des polymères et des copolymères de monomère(s) monofonctionnels d'acrylate ou de méthacrylate contenant du fluor, de tels polymères, mais pas nécessairement ceux du polymère de base, étant solubles et dissous dans un (des) monomère(s) d'acrylate ou de méthacrylate d'hydrocarbure. On peut préparer ces compositions préférées de placage à l'aide ou sans l'aide d'un monomère de réticulation tel qu'un acrylate ou un méthacrylate bifonctionnel ou multifonctionnel. On peut également utiliser pour ces placages un système thermique d'initiation de polymérisation ou un système à base d'un photoamorceur ou tout autre système connu d'initiation de polymérisation, ainsi qu'un (des) promoteur(s) d'adhésion tels que l'acide acrylique ou méthacrylique, un acrylate de silanol, un méthacrylate, un acrylate ou méthacrylate d'alcoxysilane, ou un silane de vinyle alcoxy, un acrylate ou un méthacrylate d'aryle. Après leur polymérisation, les compositions décrites, à inter-polymère transparent, présentent une large gamme de propriétés physiques. Les compositions de l'invention peuvent varier, selon ces caractéristiques physiques, de compositions thermoplastiques rigides à élastomères, à compositions réticulées, infusibles, rigides à élastomères.
