Chlorinated and chlorosulfonated polyethylenes are produced by clorinating substantially linear olefin polymers having a melt flow ratio, I10/I2, » 5.63, a molecular weight distribution, Mw/Mn, defined by the equation: Mw/Mn « (I10/I2)-4.63, a critical shear rate at onset of gross melt facture of at least 50 percent greater than the critical shear rate at the onset of surface melt facture of a linear olefin polymer having about the same I2 and Mw/Mn and at least about 0.01 long chain branches/1000 carbons and a molecular weight distribution from about 1.5 to about 2.5 and their method of manufacture are disclosed. The chlorosulfonated polyethylenes are produced by treating the chlorinated polyethylenes with a mixture of gaseous chlorine and sulfur dioxide.

L'invention décrit des polyéthylènes chlorés et chlorosulfonés produits en chlorant des polymères oléfiniques sensiblement linéaires ayant un rapport d'écoulement de fusion I10/I2 » 5,63, une distribution de poids moléculaires Mw/Mn définie par l'équation Mw/Mn « (I10/I2) - 4,63 et un taux de cisaillement critique à l'apparition d'une grosse fracture de fusion d'au moins 50 % supérieur au taux de cisaillement critique à l'apparition d'une fracture de fusion en surface d'un polymère oléfinique linéaire pour lequel I2 et Mw/Mn sont sensiblement identiques et ayant au moins environ 0,01 ramification à chaîne longue pour 1000 carbones, ainsi qu'une distribution de poids moléculaire comprise entre environ 1,5 et environ 2,5; l'invention décrit également leur procédé de fabrication. Les polyéthylènes chlorosulfonés sont produits en traitant les polyéthylènes chlorés par un mélange de chlore à l'état gazeux et de dioxyde de soufre.
