Abstract

A method for monitoring food intake for an individual and providing an indication when the food intake exceeds a predetermined allowable amount, comprises the steps of monitoring the individual over a predetermined period of time in order to establish an empirical relationship for the individual between a change in at least one physiological variable and a rate and/or amount of food intake. Upon starting each meal, the change in each of the relevant physiological variables is measured so as to determine from the empirical relationship an estimated rate and/or amount of food intake. This permits calculation of a maximum eating time to intake the predetermined allowable amount for the individual, upon expiry of which an indication is given to stop eating. A system includes a wrist watch (20) having a Doppler ultrasound transducer (13) for placing over the user's radial artery and producing an audible alarm when the individual has been eating for sufficient time to consume the predetermined allowable amount of food. The watch can, if desired also include a self-programming facility for allowing determination of the empirical relationship for the individual.

L'invention se rapporte à un procédé de contrôle de consommation de nourriture d'un sujet et qui indique si l'ingestion de nourriture dépasse une quantité autorisée prédéterminée. Ce procédé consiste à contrôler le patient sur une durée prédéterminée afin d'établir une relation empirique concernant ce sujet entre une modification d'au moins une variable physiologique et une cadence d'ingestion et/ou quantité de nourriture ingérée. Au début de chaque repas, la modification de chacune des variables physiologiques appropriées est mesurée de façon à déterminer, à partir de la relation empirique, une cadence d'ingestion et/ou quantité estimée de nourriture ingérée. Ceci permet de calculer, pour un sujet, un temps maximum d'ingestion de la quantité de nourriture autorisée et prédéterminée, et, lorsque ce temps est écoulé, un signal est donné pour qu'il s'arrête de manger. Un système comprend une montre-bracelet (20) dotée d'un transducteur ultrasonore Doppler (13) qui se place sur l'artère radiale de l'utilisateur et déclenche une alarme audible lorsque le patient a mangé sur une durée suffisante pour consommer la quantité autorisée et prédéterminée de nourriture. La montre peut également comporter, le cas échéant, une fonction d'autoprogrammation pour pouvoir déterminer la relation empirique concernant le sujet.
