A multiple user data storage, retrieval and distribution system (100) containing a parallel processing computer system that forms a digital information server (208). The server contains a plurality of parallel processors (216n, 218n, 220n, 222n) each connected to a information storage device (224n, 226n, 228n). The user data is stored in a distributed manner amongst the information storage devices (224n, 226n, 228n). The distribution system (100) dynamically allocates the users to the system based upon the user's requested operating mode. During successive user service periods, all the users are supplied their requested data. The system also provides error detection and correction for the data requested by the users. Additional data can be added to the information storage devices (224n, 226n, 228n) during each service period, and select information storage devices can be recalibrated without affecting system operation. Data is retrieved from the information storage devices in an arbitrary order. The system contains an output timing sequencer (Fig. 11) to generate output data in a predefined order. The disclosed apparatus and method find applicability in video servers, medical imaging, special effects and animation, and location based entertainment systems among other applications.

Un système (100) de stockage, de recherche et de diffusion de données, destiné à une pluralité d'utilisateurs, comporte un système d'ordinateurs parallèles de traitement formant un serveur (208) d'informations numériques. Le serveur contient une pluralité de processeurs parallèles (216n, 218n, 220n, 222n), chacun relié à un dispositif de stockage (224n, 226n, 228n) de l'information. Les données destinées aux utilisateurs sont réparties dans les dispositifs de stockage (224n, 226n, 228n) de l'information. Le système de répartition (100) dirige d'une manière dynamique les utilisateurs dans le système en fonction du mode opératoire requis par l'utilisateur. Durant les périodes successives d'utilisation, tous les utilisateurs reçoivent l'information demandée. Le système permet également de détecter et de corriger les erreurs dans les données demandées par les utilisateurs. On peut introduire des données additionnelles dans les dispositifs de stockage (224n, 226n, 228n) de l'information durant chaque période d'utilisation, et on peut recalibrer des dispositifs de stockage de l'information sélectionnés sans influer sur le fonctionnement du système. On récupère les données à partir des dispositifs de stockage de l'information dans un ordre arbitraire. Le système contient un séquenceur de sortie (fig. 11) permettant de générer les données de sortie dans un ordre prédéterminé. L'appareil et le procédé décrits trouvent des applications, entre autres, dans les serveurs de vidéo, l'imagerie médicale, les effets spéciaux et l'animation, et pour divers spectacles et divertissements.
