Mica-wrapped wires for fire-resistant cables have an unusually low degree of overlap in the mica tape wraps, which unexpectably produces a smoother external profile while retaining an acceptable degree of fire protection. Two layers of glass-cloth-backed mica tape, preferably with a polymer film overlying the cloth, are preferably applied with their respective (low) overlaps staggered. This smoother wrapping is especially effective when thin (less than 0.8 mm) polymer coatings are to be extruded over the wrapped wire.

Fils enveloppés de mica, destinés à des câbles ignifuges, et dont l'enveloppement avec une bande de mica présente un degré anormalement faible de chevauchement, constituant ainsi de manière inattendue des fils au profil extérieur plus lisse possédant cependant un degré acceptable d'ignifugation. On applique deux épaisseurs de bande de mica à support en tissu de verre, ce tissu étant préférablement recouvert d'un film polymère, les chevauchements respectifs (inférieurs) étant placés en quinconce. Cet enveloppement lisse est particulièrement efficace lorsque l'on doit extruder des revêtements polymères (inférieurs à 0,8 mm) sur le fil enveloppé.
