A generalized configuration expert system (16) for generating a complete, legal, and near-optimal configuration for any complex system consisting of multiple components is disclosed. The present invention allows a developer (10) to specify a configurator framework for solving a particular configuration problem. A user (26) then operates the customized configurator (16) to generate a configuration solution based on the user's requests and the system's requirements and constraints. The generalized configurator uses declaratively constructed graphs (24, 34) and multiple interacting packing engines (36). A two-level, bipartite, spreading activation graph (24, 34) is used as the knowledge representation of the components to be configured and their associated relationships. The invention dynamically manages the interaction of the multiple packer engines (36) to select the appropriate piece of the total configuration problem to work on at any point in time, while still taking into account the other packing problems. The invention provides the ability to declaratively define the constraints used by the packing engines to assure correct configuration results.

Système expert universel (16) de configuration permettant de configurer de manière complète, respectant les règles et quasi optimale tout système complexe de composants multiples. L'invention permet à un développeur (10) d'élaborer une structure de configurateur destinée à résoudre un problème particulier de configuration. Un utilisateur (26) peut alors, à l'aide dudit configurateur (16) élaborer une solution de configuration tenant compte de ses desiderata de l'utilisateur, et des exigences et contraintes propres au système. Le configurateur universel utilise des graphes (24, 34) à structure déclarative et des générateurs multiples de configuration interactifs (36). Un graphe (24, 34) en deux parties à deux niveaux à activation propagée sert à la représentation cognitive des composants à configurer et de leurs relations d'association. L'invention gère dynamiquement les interactions entre les générateurs multiples de configuration (36) et sélectionne l'élément approprié d'un problème global de configuration à chacun des moments, tout en prenant en considération les autres problèmes de configuration; en outre, elle offre la possibilité de définir déclarativement les contraintes utilisées par les générateurs de configuration pour obtenir des résultats corrects de configuration.
