Abstract

An automated sensor transport system for non-destructive inspection of a weld through the use of ultrasonic waves produced by an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT). The system includes: a computer control unit (31), a transport apparatus (32) having a first EMAT (24) for producing an ultrasonic SH shear wave and a second EMAT (26) for receiving an ultrasonic SH shear wave reflected from a weld (22) and a calibration means (32) and a data acquisition unit, coordinates the weld test with completion of the weld. An edge detection sensor (35), which is affixed to the transport apparatus (32) is used to automatically position the transport apparatus (32) for a weld scan and to signal completion of the scan. The system includes an electrostatic shield (63) to protect the second EMAT (26) from electromagnetic and radio frequency interference. Other new and improved electronic features permit the computer control unit (31) to be remotely located from the transport apparatus (32) and the welding apparatus.

La présente invention concerne un système de transport de capteur automatisé destiné à la vérification non destructive d'une soudure au moyen d'ondes ultrasonores produites par un transducteur acoustique électromagnétique. Le système se compose d'un ordinateur de commande (31), d'un dispositif de transport (32) muni d'un premier transducteur acoustique électromagnétique (24) produisant une onde de cisaillement SH et d'un second transducteur acoustique électromagnétique (26) recevant une onde de cisaillement SH réfléchie par une soudure (22), d'un organe de vérification (32) et d'un organe de saisie des données, le tout permettant de coordonner les opérations de vérification de la soudure et d'achèvement de la soudure. Un capteur de contours (35), monté sur le dispositif de transport (32), permet de positionner automatiquement le dispositif de transport (32) pour l'examen du soudage et pour signaler l'achèvement de l'examen. Le système est pourvu d'un écran électrostatique (63) protégeant le second transducteur acoustique électromagnétique des parasites électromagnétique et radio. D'autres dispositifs électroniques nouveaux et perfectionnés permettent de placer l'ordinateur de commande (31) à une certaine distance du dispositif de transport (32) et de l'appareil à souder.
