Abstract
(EN)
An automatic transmission for a motor vehicle comprises (a) an input shaft (26), (b) a compound planetary gear set (40) coaxially mounted about the input shaft (26) for rotation therewith, the compound planetary gear set (40) operable under control of a reduced number of clutches and brakes to establish first to fourth forward drive ratios, (c) an output shaft (28) lying in parallel with the input shaft (26), (d) a simple planetary gear set (70) coaxially mounted about the output shaft (28) for rotation therewith, the simple planetary gear set (70) operable to provide fifth forward drive ratio by way of further increasing the pre-established fourth ratio, and (e) a chain (60) and sprocket coupler (54, 56) for delivering rotaty power from the compound planetary gear set (40) to the simple planetary gear set (70). As an alternative, the chain (60) and sprocket coupler (54, 56) may be replaced with drive and driven transfer gears which are kept in a mutually meshing relationship.

Transmission automatique pour véhicule automobile comportant (a) un arbre de commande (26); (b) un train planétaire composite (40) monté coaxial autour de l'arbre de commande (26) et solidaire en rotation de celui-ci, ce train planétaire composite (40) étant commandé par un nombre réduit d'embrayages et de freins de sorte qu'il établit un premier à un quatrième rapport d'entraînement de marche avant; (c) un arbre principal (28) parallèle à l'arbre de commande (26); (d) un train planétaire simple (70) monté coaxial autour de l'arbre principal (28) et solidaire en rotation de celui-ci, ce train planétaire simple (70) étant adapté pour établir un cinquième rapport d'entraînement de marche avant en augmentant davantage le quatrième rapport préétabli; et (e) un accouplement à chaîne (60) et pignons (54, 56) servant à communiquer au train planétaire simple (70) la rotation du train planétaire composite (40). Selon une variante de réalisation, l'accouplement à chaîne (60) et pignons (54, 56) est remplacé par des roues menante et menée de transfert maintenues en prise l'une avec l'autre.
