Abstract

An automotive refinish coating composition having a volatile organic content not exceeding 3.0 pounds per gallon contains a hydroxyl functional polyester and a polyisocyanate curing agent. The hydroxyl functional polyester is prepared from reactants containing: (A) from about 15 percent to about 50 percent of a polyol or mixture of polyols, each having a formula molecular weight from about 50 to about 2,000; (B) from about 15 percent to about 50 percent of a long chain monocarboxylic acid or mixture of such acids, each having from about 6 to 24 carbon atoms; and (C) from about 15 percent to about 30 percent of 1,4-cyclohexane dicarboxylic acid; the percentages based on the total weight of reactants used in preparing the polyester. The refinish coating composition is particularly suitable as a clear topcoat over a pigmented basecoat.

Une composition de revêtement de retouche pour automobile à faible teneur en substances organiques volatiles, ne dépassant pas 3,0 livres par gallon, contient un polyester à hydroxyles fonctionnels et un polyisocyanate comme agent de durcissement. Le polyester à hydroxyles fonctionnels est préparé à partir de réactifs contenant: (A) entre environ 15 pour-cent et environ 50 pour-cent d'un polyol ou d'un mélange de polyols, chacun ayant un poids moléculaire, d'après la formule, situé entre environ 50 et environ 2000, (B) entre environ 15 pour-cent et environ 50 pour-cent d'un acide monocarboxylique à chaîne longue ou d'un mélange de tels acides, ayant chacun environ 6 à 24 atomes de carbone, et (C) entre environ 15 pour-cent et environ 30 pour-cent d'acide 1,4-cyclohexane dicarboxylique, les pourcentages étant exprimés par rapport au poids total des réactifs utilisés pour préparer le polyester. La composition de revêtement de retouche est particulièrement utile pour les couches de finition transparentes appliquées sur les couches de base pigmentées.
