Abstract

An automated method for non-destructive inspection and evaluation of a weld through the use of ultrasonic waves produced by an electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT). The method includes automatic positioning of a transport apparatus containing EMAT transmitter (24) and receiver coils (26) in proximity of a just-completed weld (22); scanning the weld; receiving an electrical signal produced in the EMAT receiver coil by a reflected ultrasonic SH shear wave (29); recording and monitoring the electrical signal; analyzing the electrical signal relative to predetermined control limits; signaling the presence of a defect in the weld; and communicating electronically with a welding apparatus to reperform and/or alter the way in which subsequent welds are made so as to avoid repetition of the defect. The method also includes automatic receiving, recording, and monitoring of welding apparatus and welding process data, as well as automatic adjustment of corresponding welding apparatus and welding process parameters.

La présente invention concerne un procédé automatisé de vérification et d'évaluation non destructive d'une soudure au moyen d'ondes ultrasonores produites par un transducteur acoustique électromagnétique. Le procédé se décompose en plusieurs opérations: le positionnement automatique, à proximité d'une soudure venant d'être achevée (22), d'un appareil de transport contenant un émetteur (24) à transducteurs acoustiques électromagnétiques (24) et des bobines réceptrices (26); l'examen de la soudure; la réception d'un signal électrique produit au niveau de la bobine du récepteur à transducteurs acoustiques électromagnétiques par la réception d'une onde de cisaillement ultrasonore (29) SH réfléchie; l'enregistrement et la vérification du signal électrique; l'analyse du signal électrique par rapport à des limites opérationnelles préétablies; l'indication de la présence d'un défaut dans la soudure; et la communication par voie électronique avec un appareil à souder, de façon qu'il refasse la soudure et/ou modifie la façon de réaliser les soudures ultérieures pour éviter la répétition du défaut. Le procédé comprend également la réception, l'enregistrement et le contrôle automatiques des données relatives à l'appareil de soudage et au processus de soudage, ainsi que la reprise automatique des paramètres correspondants concernant l'appareil à souder et le processus de soudage.
