A lining wear measurement system which accepts signals from a plurality of movement/displacement sensors coupled to respective auto-adjusters of vehicle brakes and giving information about prevailing brake pad/lining thickness. The system includes a means to hold internally a target wear-out point representing a minimum acceptable brake lining thickness based upon the characteristis of known linings and an internally stored starting point which is set in automatically at a suitable point in time after the brake has been equipped with a set of replacement linings so as thereby to take account of the reducing disc or drum thickness as the life of the brake progresses. Alternatively, the system can hold an internally stored starting point which is arranged to be manually initiated but actually stored at some suitable point in time thereafter upon each set of replacement linings being installed. The system can also recognise an opening up operation of the brake, such as is necessary to remove worn linings for inspection or replacement purposes, by comparison of pre-opening and post-opening brake position readings.

Un système d'évaluation de l'usure des garnitures de frein réceptionne des signaux provenant d'une pluralité de détecteurs de mouvement/déplacement couplés à des dispositifs d'autoréglage respectifs de freins de véhicules, et fournit des informations sur l'épaisseur actuelle des plaquettes/garnitures de frein. Le système comprend un dispositif mémorisant un repère d'usure cible correspondant à une épaisseur de garniture de frein minimum, fondée sur les caractéristiques de garnitures connues, et un repère de 'mise en service' mémorisé qui se règle automatiquement à un moment approprié lorsque le frein a été équipé d'un nouveau jeu de garnitures de façon à tenir compte de l'épaisseur réduite du disque ou tambour pendant la vie utile du frein. Selon une variante, le système peut conserver un repère de 'mise en service' mémorisé, conçu de façon à être déclenché manuellement, mais effectivement mémorisé à un moment approprié, lors de chaque installation d'un nouveau jeu de garnitures. Le système peut également reconnaître une ouverture forcée du frein qui est nécessaire pour enlever les garnitures usées destinées à être contrôlées ou remplacées. Cette reconnaissance se fait en comparant les mesures de position avant et après l'ouverture forcée.
