(EN)The present invention provides a lithium battery comprising a cathode active material having as its major component an oxide of vanadium, which is a compound of the general formula M¿x?V¿3?O¿8?. The vanadium oxide active material of the invention is prepared by a series of steps in which a precursor ZV¿3?O¿8?-based compound undergoes quantitative ionic substitution to provide M¿x?V¿3?O¿8?, where M is a mono-, di-, tri- or tetravalent metal or semi-metal element.
