Apparatuses and methods for assessing and biofeedback training of movement coordination, strength, and speed skills critical to balance during a mobility task performed by a subject on a combination of surfaces, in particular stepping up and down, climbing and descending stairs, sitting and rising from a sitting position. The apparatus includes a force-sensing plate (12). The force-sensing plate (12) measures the forces exerted on its sensing area, i.e., its top surface, and transmits output signals representative of the measured forces. A plurality of support surfaces (11) is mounted in specified positions relative to the force-sensing plate's (12) sensing area, in such a way that substantially all forces exerted by the subject onto the support surfaces are transmitted to the sensing area. The plurality of surfaces (11) may form a step, stairs or seat. A data processor (14) accepts the output signals from the force-sensing plate (12) and calculates quantities related to the positions and magnitudes of forces exerted by the subject on the support surfaces (11). In order to permit biofeedback training, means (13) for displaying position and magnitude quantities calculated by the computational means and for displaying additional quantities related to performance goals is provided so that the subject can see these quantities while performing the mobility task.

L'invention concerne des appareils et des procédés permettant d'évaluer physiologiquement la coordination des mouvements, la force et la vélocité essentielles à l'équilibre pour qu'un sujet puisse effectuer un mouvement de déplacement sur une combinaison de surface et plus particulièrement pour marcher sur place, monter et descendre les escaliers, s'asseoir et se lever depuis la position assise. Ledit appareil comprend une plaque à capteur de force (12) qui mesure la force exercée sur sa zone sensible, c'est-à-dire sa surface supérieure, et transmet des signaux de sortie représentatifs des forces mesurées. Une pluralité de surfaces de support (11) est montée dans des positions déterminées par rapport à la zone sensible de la plaque à capteur de force (12) de sorte que pratiquement toutes les forces exercées par le sujet sur les surfaces du support soient transmises à la zone sensible. La pluralité de surfaces (11), peut former une marche, des escaliers ou un siège. Un processeur de données (14) accepte les signaux de sortie provenant de la plaque à capteurs de force (12) et calcule les valeurs relatives aux positions et à l'ampleur des forces exercées par le sujet sur les surfaces de support (11).
