A fabric for filtering particulate matter from a stream of hot gases, e.g., from a diesel engine, has an unknotted weave of flexible, incompressible, uncrimped, spaced support yarns and flexible, lofty, fully crimped, fill yarns. During the weaving process, the fill yarns are pulled tightly against the support yarns so that they do not slip or shift. For greater assurance of good filtering, a filter employs multiple layers of the fabric, with the support yarns of each layer extending orthogonally to those of adjacent layers. For uses involving prolonged exposure to high temperature, both the support yarns and fill yarns can be continuous-filament ceramic yarns such as alumina-boria-silica yarns. For lower temperatures, the yarns can be primarily glass.

L'invention concerne un tissu pour filtrer une matière particulaire contenue dans un courant de gaz chauds, par ex., d'un moteur diesel. Ce tissu possède une armure non nouée de fils de support espacés souples, incompressibles, non frisés et de fils de trame, bien frisés, à torsion floche et souples. Lors du procédé de tissage, les fils de trame sont poussés de manière serrée contre les fils de support de façon à ce qu'ils ne glissent pas ou ne se décalent pas. Afin d'assurer parfaitement une bonne filtration, un filtre utilise des couches multiples de tissu, les fils de support de chaque couche s'étendant sous une forme orthogonale par rapport à ceux des couches adjacentes. Pour des utilisations impliquant une exposition prolongée à haute température, les deux fils de support et de trame peuvent être des fils de céramique à filaments continus tels que des fils d'oxyde d'aluminium, de bore, d'oxyde de silicium. Pour une utilisation à températures plus basses, les fils peuvent être essentiellement en verre.
