In the operation of construction vehicles, the reduction of the noise associated with their operation has become a primary concern. A major source of the noise created by the operation of a vehicle resides with the engine and associated components utilized to power the vehicle. While these components have been encased in enclosures comprised of sound suppression material and restricted openings through which noise may escape, a severe problem has been created in obtaining proper airflow into the enclosure for adequate cooling of the surface temperatures of the components as well as the cooling systems for the fluids that circulate internally through the drive train components. Additionally, the temperature rise experienced within a tightly sealed engine enclosure can exceed the allowable maximum temperatures of components such as microprocessors. The ventilation apparatus (51) of the present invention provides an airflow control system that is designed to minimize noise while providing adequate airflow both during engine operation and after engine shutdown. The enclosure (24) that is devided into first and second compartments (26, 28). The first compartment (26) houses the drive train components (14) and the second compartment (28) houses the fluid cooling apparatus (30). The first compartment (26) is provided with at least one air communicating means (52) to transfer ambient air from outside the enclosure through a circuitous air passageway (54) lined with sound absorptive material (60, 62). The air passageway (54) is formed in at least one of the walls that forms the first compartment (26) so that it may be critically positioned with respect to the more heat sensitive components (14) housed within the enclosure (24) yet maximizing the efficient use of available space. A plurality of blowers (78) may be included in the air passageway (54) to selectively direct the flow of air toward selected portions of the first compartment (26).

Dans le domaine de la construction automobile la réduction du bruit associée au fonctionnement des véhicules est devenue un problème majeur. La principale origine du bruit créé par le fonctionnement d'un véhicule est liée au moteur et aux éléments associés utilisés pour faire fonctionner ledit véhicule. Afin de réduire le bruit on a placé ces éléments dans des carters contenant un matériau atténuant le bruit et présentant des ouvertures par lesquelles s'échappe le bruit; ceci a créé un grave problème concernant l'obtention d'un écoulement d'air adéquat dans le carter servant à refroidir de manière appropriée les températures existant à la surface des éléments et la température des systèmes de refroidissement des fluides qui circulent à l'intérieur des éléments du train d'entraînement. En outre, l'augmentation de la température existant dans un carter de moteur hermétiquement fermé peut dépasser les températures maximales de sécurité pour des éléments tels que des microprocesseurs. L'appareil de ventilation (51) de cette invention utilise un système de commande de l'écoulement d'air qui est conçu pour minimiser le bruit tout en assurant un écoulement d'air adéquat aussi bien lorsque le moteur fonctionne que lorsqu'il est à l'arrêt. Le carter (24) est divisé en deux premier et deuxième compartiments (26, 28). Le premier compartiment (26) abrite les éléments (14) du train d'entraînement et le deuxième compartiment (28) contient l'appareil (30) de refroidissement des fluides. Ledit premier compartiment (26) comprend au moins un système (52) de passage pour l'air qui sert à transférer l'air ambiant depuis l'extérieur du carter par un passage indirect pour l'air (54) recouvert d'un matériau (60, 62) absorbant le bruit. Le passage (54) pour l'air est formé dans au moins une des parois définissant le premier compartiment (26) de sorte qu'il puisse être positionné de manière critique par rapport aux éléments (14) les plus sensibles à la chaleur qui se situent dans le carter (24) tout en tirant le meilleur profit de l'espace disponible. Plusieurs ventilateurs (78) peuvent être placés dans le passage (54) pour l'air afin de diriger sélectivement l'écoulement d'air vers des zones choisies du premier compartiment (26).
