Circuits are provided whereby rechargeable batteries and cells are charged very fast by a controlled current, and substantially at a rate never exceeding the ability of the battery or cell to accept current - i.e., to convert electrical current to stored chemical energy. The resistance free terminal voltage of the battery or cell is detected during an interval when the charging current is interrupted, and compared against an independent reference voltage to control the charging current when a difference between the reference voltage and the sensed resistance free terminal voltage exists. The reference voltage may be altered at any instant in time, as a function of the ambient temperature, or the internal temperature or pressure of the battery, as a function of the charging current when it is within a predetermined range, or if a particular change in the value of the charging current occurs over a predetermined period of time. Charging characteristics may also be controlled and altered either through the passage of time or as a consequence of predetermined conditions occurring. The various provisions preclude thermal runaway for example, and assure very rapid and complete charging operations no matter what may be the condition of the battery - provided it is capable of accepting charge - and for various kinds of rechargeable batteries and cells including nickel cadmium, lead acid, and so on.

Cuircuits permettant de charger très rapidement des accumulateurs et piles rechargeables à l'aide d'un courant contrôlé et à rythme n'excédant jamais la capacité de l'accumulateur ou de la pile à accepter le courant, c'est-à-dire de convertir du courant électrique en énergie chimique stockée. La tension terminale exempte de résistance de l'accumulateur ou de la pile est détectée au cours d'un laps de temps pendant lequel le courant de charge est interrompu, et comparée à une tension de référence indépendante de manière à contrôler le courant de charge lorsqu'il existe une différence entre la tension de référence et la tension terminale exempte de résistance détectée. La tension de référence peut être modifiée à tout moment, en fonction de la température ambiante ou de la température ou pression internes de l'accumulateur, en fonction du courant de charge lorsqu'il se situe dans une fourchette prédéterminée, ou si une modification particulière de la valeur du courant de charge survient sur un laps de temps prédéterminé. Les caractéristiques de charge peuvent également être contrôlées et modifiées ou bien par l'écoulement de temps, ou bien en tant que conséquence des conditions prédéterminées survenant. Les diverses mesures préviennent par exemple l'emballement thermique et assurent des opérations de charge très rapides et complètes, quel que soit l'état de l'accumulateur, à condition qu'il soit capable d'accepter une charge, et pour divers types d'accumulateurs et piles rechargeables comprenant du nickel, du cadmium, de l'acide de plomb, etc.
