Magnetic separation apparatus and method for separating colloidal magnetic particles from a non-magnetic test medium in which the magnetic test particles are suspended. The apparatus comprises a container (23) having a peripheral wall (25) with an internal surface area for receiving the non-magnetic test medium. Magnetic means (27) comprising a plurality of north magnetic poles and a plurality of south magnetic poles positioned alternatively around the periphery of said container produce a magnetic field gradient within the test medium. Accordingly to the method of the invention, a container holding the test medium is positioned adjacent to said magnets, producing a magnetic field gradiant operative to cause the magnetic particles to be attracted to the internal surface area of the wall and to adhere to said area. The non-magnetic test medium is separated from the magnetized particles, which may conveniently be washed while adhered to said internal surface area and subjected to further analysis.

Appareil et procédé de séparation magnétique destinés à séparer des particules magnétiques colloïdales d'un milieu d'analyse non-magnétique dans lequel les particules magnétiques à analyser se trouvent en suspension. Ledit appareil comprend un récipient (23) comportant une paroi périphérique (25) dotée d'une surface interne destinée à recevoir le milieu d'analyse non-magnétique. Des dispositifs magnétiques (27) comprenant une pluralité de pôles magnétiques nord et une pluralité de pôles magnétiques sud placés alternativement autour de la périphérie dudit récipient fournissent un gradient de champ magnétique au sein du milieu d'analyse. Selon la présente invention, un récipient contenant le milieu d'analyse est placé de manière adjacente auxdits aimants, ce qui produit un gradient de champ magnétique grâce auquel les particules magnétiques sont attirées vers la surface interne de la paroi et y adhèrent. Le milieu d'analyse non-magnétique est séparé des particules magnétisées qui peuvent être lavées facilement tandis qu'elles adhèrent à ladite surface interne et être soumises à des analyses supplémentaires.
