Abstract:
(EN) A novel, water-cooled plasma torch is described which is particularly suitable for piercing a refractory material. A method using the plasma torch to open a plugged taphole in a furnace wall is also described. The method can be easily automated and comprises melting and disintegrating the plug with a high-speed and high-temperature swirling gas jet generated by the torch. The main advantage of the method is that the gas jet leaving the torch has a very accurately defined outline providing accurate and repeatable piercing of the plug whereby the taphole can be efficiently replugged once the furnace has been emptied.
(FR) Une nouvelle torche à plasma est décrite, laquelle est refroidie à l'eau et particulièrement bien conçue pour percer un matériau réfractaire. Une méthode utilisant cette torche à plasma pour ouvrir un trou de coulée fermé par un bouchon dans la paroi d'un four, est également décrite. Cette méthode qui se prête bien à l'automatisation consiste à fondre et désagréger le bouchon au moyen du jet de gaz tourbillonnant à haute vitesse et haute température généré par la torche. Le principal avantage de cette méthode est que le jet de gaz qui sort de la torche a un contour très bien défini qui assure un perçage précis et reproductible du bouchon avec, comme résultat, la possibilité de refermer efficacement le trou de coulée avec un nouveau bouchon après que le four ait été vidé.
