Abstract:
(EN) The spectral-gain characteristics of an erbium-doped fibre amplifier have been tailored by incorporating a gain-shaping-filter within the amplifier. The filter is chosen to modify the natural gain spectrum of the amplifier so as to suppress the gain peak and thus flatten the overall spectral-gain profile. Because the amplifier is distributed, it is possible to insert one or more filters along the length of the fibre. It is shown that there are considerable advantages to locating the filter within the length of the amplifier, rather than at the end, which is the more obvious choice. Advantages are that the amplifier pump efficiency is almost unaffected and the output saturation power is similar to that of the unshaped amplifier. In addition, the flat spectral gain provides an amplifier ideally-suited for use at a number of signal wavelengths, as required for wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM). The invention therefore comprises both the concept of filtering to shape the gain response of the amplifier and the recognition that this can be achieved without penalty by careful location of one or more filters along the length of the amplifier.
(FR) Les caractéristiques de gain spectral d'un amplificateur à fibre dopée d'erbium ont été modifiées en introduisant un filtre de modification de gain dans l'amplificateur. Le filtre est choisi de façon à modifier le spectre de gain naturel de l'amplificateur afin de supprimer la crête du gain et d'aplatir ainsi le profil général du gain spectral. Comme l'amplificateur est distribué, il est possible d'insérer un ou plusieurs filtre(s) sur la longueur de la fibre. Il est démontré qu'il y a des avantages considérables à placer le filtre sur la longueur de l'amplificateur plutôt qu'à l'extrémité de celui-ci, ce qui semblerait l'endroit le plus indiqué. Ces avantages résident dans le fait que l'efficacité de la pompe de l'amplificateur n'est presque pas affectée et que la puissance de saturation de débit est similaire à celle de l'amplificateur non formé. En outre, le gain spectral plat permet d'obtenir un amplificateur idéal pour l'utilisation à un certain nombre de longueurs d'ondes de signaux, tel qu'il est requis pour le multiplexage à division de longueurs d'ondes (WDM). L'invention comprend donc à la fois le concept de filtrage pour modifier la forme de la réponse de gain de l'amplificateur et la découverte que ceci peut être accompli sans désavantage si on place avec attention un ou plusieurs filtres sur la longueur de l'amplificateur.
