Abstract:
(EN) Described is a process in which pigments, in particular kaolin, for use in the paper-manufacturing industry are treated with a high-molecular polymer, solvated by carboxylate groups, of an ethylenically unsaturated, radical-polymerizable carboxylic acid as binder. By gradual addition of an acidification agent, the binder is coacervated and precipitated on the pigment. Characteristic of the invention is the fact that the amount of acidification agent is limited to a level at which the pigment retains its negative surface charge, and the coacervate still retains water. Using pigments treated in this way, printing paper with an elevated pigment content and/or elevated tearing strength can be manufactured.
