Abstract:
(EN) An airborne icing Hazard Detector (10) for aircraft uses dual frequency radar beams (20, 22) which are transmitted into a cloud (16) ahead of the aircraft. The reflected signals (20, 22) at each of the two frequencies are compared and processed to determine the presence, amount and location of regions of liquid water (18) in the cloud. The presence of liquid water is determined as a result of liquid water attenuating the power of one of the signals a greater amount than other signal, due to different attenuation characteristics of the two signals at the two frequencies. A temperature sensor (54) provides ambient temperature information to determine if the detected liquid water is super-cooled. Upon detecting of a predetermined amount of liquid water and the determination that it is super-cooled, an advance warning indication is provided to allow the pilot to avoid flying through the volumetric region of super-cooled liquid water and risking ice formation on the aircraft.
(FR) Un détecteur du danger de givrage (10) pour avions utilise des faisceaux radar à double fréquence (20, 22) émis en direction d'un nuage (16) situé devant l'avion. Les signaux réfléchis (20, 22) à chacune des deux fréquences sont comparés et traités pour permettre une détermination de la présence, de la quantité et de l'emplacement des zones d'eau liquide (18) dans le nuage. On peut déterminer la présence d'eau liquide car celle-ci a l'effet d'atténuer la puissance de l'un des signaux plus qu'elle n'atténue la puissance de l'autre, à cause des différentes caractéristiques d'atténuation des deux signaux aux deux dites fréquences. Un palpeur pyrométrique (54) produit des informations relatives à la température ambiante afin de déterminer si l'eau liquide détectée est surfondue. Lors de la détection d'une quantité prédéterminée d'eau liquide et de la détermination de son état surfondu, un indicateur avertisseur permet au pilote de contourner la zone volumétrique d'eau liquide surfondue et donc d'éviter tout risque de dépôt de glace sur l'avion.
