Claims

1. A process for producing improved
microporous waterproof and moisture vapor permeable products consisting essentially of a waterproof and moisture vapor permeable matrix, the internal micro- structure of which is at least partially coated with a hydrophobic material said process comprising the steps of (1) applying to the surface of said matrix a liquid hydrophobic material, (2) allowing said liquid to at least partially penetrate into the microstructure of the matrix, and then ( 3 ) subjecting the product of step 2 to a drying, vulcanizing or curing treatment.

2. The process of claim 1 wherein the waterproof and moisture vapor permeable matrix is microporous biaxially fibrillated polytetrafluoroethylene.

3. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydro-phobic material is a curable silicone composition.

4. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydro-phobic material is a non-curable silicone composition.

5. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydro-phobic material is a mixture of a curable silicone composition and a non-curable silicone composition.

6. The process of claim 1 wherein the hydro-phobic material is a 50/50 mixture of a curable silicone composition and a non-curable silicone
composition.

7. The process of claim 1 wherein the waterproof and moisture vapor permeable matrix is a microporous biaxially fibrillated semi-interpenetrating polymer network of polytetrafluoroethylene and
silicone.

15. A waterproof and moisture vapor permeable laminated fabric consisting essentially of (1) a layer of breathable fabric and (2) a layer of a waterproof and moisture vapor permeable matrix, the internal microstructure of which is at least partially coated with a hydrophobic material.

16. The laminated fabric of claim 15 wherein the waterproof and moisture vapor permeable matrix is microporous biaxially fibrillated polytetrafluoroethylene.

17. The laminated fabric of claim 15 wherein the hydrophobic material is a cured silicone
composition.

18. The laminated fabric of claim 15 wherein the hydrophobic material is an uncured silicone composition.

19. The laminated fabric of claim 15 wherein the hydrophobic material is a mixture of a cured silicone composition and an uncured silicone composition.

20. The laminated fabric of claim 15 wherein the hydrophobic material is a 50/50 mixture of a cured silicone composition and an uncured silicone
composition.

21. The laminated fabric of claim 15 wherein the waterproof and moisture vapor permeable matrix is a microporous biaxially fibrillated semi- interpenetrating polymer network of polytetra- fluoroethylene and silicone.

22. A microporous film consisting essentially of a matrix selected from the group consisting of biaxially fibrillated microporous polytetrafluoro- ethylene and microporous biaxially fibrillated semi- interpenetrating polymer networks of polytetra- fluoroethylene and silicone, said matrix having an internal microstructure consisting of nodes interconnected by fibrils, wherein said internal micro-structure is coated with a sufficient amount of a hydrophobic material so as to increase resistance to surfactant activity and wherein the hydrophobic material is selected from the group consisting of cured silicone compositions, non-cured silicone compositions and compositions resulting from the curing of a mixture of a curable silicone composition and a non-curable silicone composition.

A microporous film consisting essentially of a matrix selected from the group consisting of microporous biaxially fibrillated polytetra- fluoroethylene and microporous biaxially fibrillated semi-interpenetrating polymer networks of polytetra-fluoroethylene and silicone, said matrix having nodes interconnected by fibrils, wherein the internal microstructure is coated with a sufficient amount of a cured silicone composition effective to provide increased optical transparency of the film.
