CLAIMS

1. A paging communication system, comprising:
satellite based communication means for
communicating the paging information to at least one selective call receiver; and
a plurality of selective call receivers, at least some of which are capable of receiving the paging information from the satellite based communication means, and include means for acknowledging receipt of the paging information.

2. The system of claim 1 , which includes a terrestrial based communication means for communicating paging information received from the satellite based communication means to the selective call receiver designated to receive the paging information.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the terrestrail based communication means includes means for converting the paging information received from the satellite based communication means to accommodate the selective call receiver designated to receive the paging information.

4. The system of claim 1 , which includes a control means for determining where and how to deliver the paging information.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the control means operates responsive to the acknowledge signal to re-direct the paging information to another area.

6. The system of claim 4, wherein the control means operates responsive to the acknowledge signal to control the transmitting power of the satellite based communication means.

7. The system of claim 4, wherein the control means includes a memory means for storing at least information representing a preferred paging area, a preferred paging frequency, and a preferred paging protocol for at least some of the selective call receivers operative on the system.

8. The system of claim 7, wherein the control means determines where and how to deliver the paging information in accordance with the information stored within the memory means.

9. A paging communication system, comprising:
a plurality of terrestrial receivers, at least some of which are capable of acknowledging receipt of paging information from at least one or satellite or terrestrial station;
at least one terrestrial station being capable of communicating the paging information with at least one satellite; at least one satellite capable of communicating the paging information to a control station and at least one terrestrial station, and being further capable of directly transmitting the paging information to at least one of the plurality of terrestrial receivers; and
the at least one control station being capable of determining where and how to deliver the paging information.

10. A method for providing a message to one or more areas on a celestial body, comprising the steps of:
at a control station:
(a) receiving the message;
(b) determining where and how to deliver the message; (c) transmitting the message to at least one satellite orbiting the celestial body;
at the satellite:
(a) receiving the message from the control station;
(b) determining whether to transmit the message toward the celestial body or another satellite;

(c) transmitting the message in accordance with the determination of step (b);
in at least one selective call receiver:
(a) receiving the message;
(b) acknowledging receipt of the message.

11. The method of claim 10, which includes the steps of: at the satellite:
(d) receiving an acknowledge signal;
(e) informing the control station that the message was acknowledged by transmitting an information signal;
at the control station;
(d) receiving the information signal from the satellite;

(e) processing the information signal to determine the location of the selective call receiver.

12. The method of claim 10, which includes the satellite step of re-transmitting the paging message if an acknowledge signal is not received.

13. The method of claim 12, which includes the step of increasing transmitter power prior to re-transmitting the paging message.

14. The method of claim 10, which includes the satellite step of transmitting further comprises transmitting the message toward the celestial body at high power when the selective call receiver resides in a metropolitan area.

15. The method of claim 10, which includes the satellite step of transmitting further comprises transmitting the message toward the celestial body at low power when the selective call receiver resides in a rural area.

16. A communication system, comprising:
a celestial body having a plurality of individuals thereon, at least some of the individuals having a selective call receiver capable of acknowledging receipt of a message from at least one satellite orbiting the celestial body;
the plurality of terrestrial stations positioned on the celestial body for communicating the message to at least one of the selective call receivers and for communicating to a control means via a satellite network;
the control means for receiving the message, determining where and how to deliver the message, and for transmitting the message to the satellites network orbiting the celestial body;
the satellite network comprising at least one satellite arranged to communicate the message toward at least a portion of the celestial body for reception by at least one selective call receiver or terrestrial station.
