WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:

1. A polyester, comprising, as its reactive components, at least one diol and at least one
dicarboxylic acid, including a first dicarboxylic acid containing 15-36 carbon atoms, which comprises from 10 to 100 equivalent percent of the total acid component equivalents, and a second dicarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of short chain acids and polymeric fatty acids, said second dicarboxylic acid comprising up to 90 equivalent percent of the total acid component equivalents, said polyester being in the form of a viscous liquid and having a density at room temperature in the range of 1.01-1.09.

2. A polyester in accordance with claim 1, wherein said first dicarboxylic acid is selected from the group consisting of a polyalkenylsuccinic acid, an adduct of unsaturated monocarboxylic acids, or a mixture thereof.

3. A polyester in accordance with claim 1, wherein said diol has the general formula

in which Rι_, R2, R3, R4, R5 and Rg are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and alkyl having 1-4 carbon atoms, n = 1-4 and x = 0-4.

4. A polyester in accordance with claim 2, wherein said diol is selected from the group
consisting of propylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, triethylene glycol or a mixture thereof.

5. A polyester in accordance with
wherein said second dicarboxylic acid is selected from the group consisting of succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, pimelic acid, suberic acid, azelaic acid, sebacic acid, undecanedioic acid, dodecanedioic acid, oleic dimer acid, or mixtures thereof.

6. A polyester in accordance with claim 2, comprising as its reactive components a first
dicarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of dodecenylsuccinic acid, linoleic acid-acrylic acid adduct, or a mixture thereof, a diol selected from the group consisting of propylene glycol, neopentyl glycol, triethylene glycol or a mixture of two or more of said diols and a second dicarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of succinic acid, glutaric acid, adipic acid, azelaic acid, oleic dimer acid or a mixture of two or more of said second dicarboxylic acids.

7. A polyester in accordance with claim 1 having an acid value of 2 or less, an hydroxyl value of 23 or less and a 210°F kinematic viscosity of about 1700-4000 centistokes.

8. A polyester in accordance with claim 1, the reactive components of which consist essentially of substantially stoichiometric amounts of
dodecenylsuccinic acid and propylene glycol.

9. A polyester in accordance with claim 1, the reactive components of which consist essentially of substantially stoichiometric amounts of:
(a) linoleic acid - acrylic acid adduct;
(b) oleic dimer acid;
(c) a mixture of dimethyl succinate
(DMS), dimethyl glutarate (DMG) and dimethyl adipate (DMA);
(d) neopentyl glycol;

(e) propylene glycol,
the equivalents ratio of (a) to (b) to (c) being
1:1:3.55, the relative weight percentages of said esters in said mixture being about 1% DMS, about 75% DMG and about 24% DMA and the equivalents ratio of (d):(e) being from about 0.75:0.25 to about 0.90:0.10.
