Abstract:
(EN) A compression ignition, internal combustion engine has at least one pair of pistons (13, 14) operating in separate cylinders (11a, 12a) interconnected through a transfer port (19). Said at least one pair of pistons (13, 14) includes a leading piston (14) linked to a leading crankshaft (16) and operating in a leading cylinder (12a), and a trailing piston (13) linked to a trailing crankshaft (15) and operating in a trailing cylinder (11a). For the purpose of varying the compression ratio, the phase relation between said leading (14) and trailing (13) pistons is varied by means of a phase adjustment mechanism (22-26) which opratively couples the leading (16) and trailing (15) crankshafts of the engine. The fuel is injected into the leading cylinder (12a) by means of a centrally situated multi-hole fuel injector (64). The clearance volume of the trailing cylinder (11a) is at a practical minimum in order to maximize the amount of air available for combustion in the leading cylinder (12a).
(FR) Un moteur à combustion interne, à allumage par compression, comporte au moins une paire de pistons (13, 14) fonctionnant dans des cylindres (11a, 12a) séparés, reliés par un orifice (19) de transfert. Ladite paire de pistons (13, 14) comprend un piston (14) avant relié à un vilebrequin (16) avant, et fonctionnant dans un cylindre (12a) avant, ainsi qu'un piston (13) arrière relié à un vilebrequin (15) arrière, et fonctionnant dans un cylindre (11a) arrière. Afin de varier le taux de compression, on modifie la relation de phase entre lesdits pistons avant (14) et arrière (13) au moyen d'un mécanisme (22 à 26) de réglage de phase, lequel relie de manière fonctionnelle les vilebrequins avant (16) et arrière (15) du moteur. Le carburant est injecté dans le cylindre (12a) avant, au moyen d'un injecteur (64) de carburant à plusieurs trous, placé centralement. L'espace mort du cylindre (11a) arrière est dimensionné à un minimum pratique, afin de maximiser la quantité d'air disponible à la combustion, dans le cylindre (12a) avant.
