In the embodiments described in the specification, continuous casting of ingots is carried out by transferring molten metal from a hearth (35) to a mold (34) through one or more flow channels (38) which provide flow paths having a shallow angle to the horizontal and which terminate adjacent to the surface (41) of the molten metal (40) in the mold (34) so that the vertical velocity component of the stream of molten metal flowing into the mold is minimal and the horizontal velocity component is low. In one form, the hearth (33) surrounds the mold (34), providing four shallow-angle flow channels (38) uniformly spaced around the periphery of the mold (34) to avoid unilateral introduction of the molten material into the mold.

Selon les modes de réalisation décrits dans l'invention, on procède au coulage en continu de lingots par transfert de métal fondu d'une sole (35) à un moule (34) par l'intermédiaire d'un ou de plusieurs canaux d'écoulement (38) constituant des chemins d'écoulement ayant un angle peu profond par rapport à l'horizontale, et aboutissant à proximité de la surface (41) du métal fondu (40) se trouvant dans le moule (34), de sorte que la composante de vitesse verticale du courant de métal fondu s'écoulant dans le moule est minimale, et que la composante de vitesse horizontale est faible. Selon un mode de réalisation, ladite sole (33) entoure ledit moule (34), ménageant quatre canaux d'écoulement (38) à angle peu profond, espacés uniformément autour de la périphérie dudit moule (34) afin d'éviter l'introduction unilatérale de la matière fondue dans ledit moule.
