A method and apparatus are described for contacting solid particles and fluid. A liquid is sprayed as liquid droplets from the discharge tip of a nozzle (50) into hot solid particles passing upwardly in a vertical pipe (23). A venturi is formed in the pipe, and the venturi has an entrance portion which is upwardly convergent to the throat and an exit portion which is upwardly divergent from the throat. The tip of the nozzle (50) is so located relative to the venturi that liquid droplets commence vaporization, due to heat transfer from the hot solid particles, no further upstream (relative to the direction of movement of solid particles up the pipe (23)) then the throat of the venturi thereby resulting in a high degree of turbulence which causes good mixing of particles and vapour downstream of the venturi throat. The particles-vapour mixture leaving the exit portion of the venturi is well mixed and particles are substantially uniformly mixed with vapour in radial planes of the pipe (23) downstream of the venturi. The energy of the droplets entering the pipe (23) from the nozzle (50) is shared with particles upstream of the throat and accelerates them to higher velocities in the pipe (23). The method and apparatus may be employed for mixing a hydrocarbon feed with hot active craking catalyst particles in a catalytic cracking unit or process to reduce yields of light gas and coke and to increase yields of more valuable hydrocarbon products.

Procédé et appareil pour la mise en contact de particules et d'un fluide. Un liquide est vaporisé sous forme de gouttelettes depuis la tête de décharge d'une buse (50) dans des particules solides et chaudes circulant vers le haut dans un tuyau vertical (23). Un venturi se forme dans le tuyau, dont l'entrée converge vers le haut avec le col du tuyau, et dont la sortie diverge vers le haut avec ce même col. La tête de la buse (50) est située relativement au venturi de manière à ce que les gouttelettes de liquide commencent à se vaporiser, sous l'effet du transfert de chaleur des particules solides et chaudes, au maximum au niveau (par rapport à la direction du mouvement des particules solides en haut du tuyau (23)) du col du venturi. Il en résulte un degré élevé de turbulence, qui mélange intimement les particules et la vapeur sortant du col du venturi. Ce mélange particules-vapeur à la sortie du venturi est bien homogène et les particules sont presque toutes mêlées uniformément à la vapeur aux plans radiaux du tuyau (23) en bas du venturi. L'énergie des gouttelettes pénétrant dans le tuyau (23) en provenance de la buse (50) est partagée avec les particules en haut du col, dont elle accélére la vélocité dans le tuyau (23). Ce procédé et cet appareil peuvent s'utiliser pour mélanger des hydrocarbures à des particules chaudes et actives produites par craquage catalytique dans un élément ou procédé de craquage catalytique afin de réduire la production de gaz léger et de coke et d'augmenter celle de produits hydrocarbures plus précieux.
