A disc drive wherein at least two outer tracks of the disc in a region (15) beyond the defined track 0 are used to store the drive operating microprogram, and/or manufacturing test program, and/or specific electrical, mechanical and magnetic parameters and media defect information. This data can be read from these outer tracks of the disc during initialization of the disc drive, or during seek operations of the drive to immediately adjust the positioning of the read/write head. It allows the disc drive to react to microprogram problems without changing either the mask ROM or an EPROM supplied. The microprogram is read onto the drive over the I/O interface.

Unité de disques dans laquelle on utilise au moins deux pistes extérieures du disque dans une région (15) située au-delà de la piste 0 définie, afin de stocker le microprogramme de gestion de ladite unité, et/ou le programme de test de fabrication, et/ou des paramètres électriques, mécaniques et magnétiques spécifiques ainsi que des informations relatives aux défauts présentés par les supports. Ces données peuvent être extraites de ces pistes extérieures du disque, pendant l'initialisation de ladite unité de disque, ou pendant des opérations de recherche de ladite unité, afin de régler immédiatement le positionnement de la tête de lecture/écriture. Cette configuration permet à ladite unité de disque de réagir à des problèmes de microprogramme sans changer soit la mémoire ROM masquée soit une mémoire morte programmable électriquement fournies. Le microprogramme est enregistré dans ladite unité par l'intermédiaire de l'interface E/S.
