The method for segmenting the field of motion according to the invention comprises the formation of a field of motion by blocks from motion vectors assigned to image pixels and the processing of the field of vectors by blocks in order to extract from said field an assembly of dominant motion vectors by elimination of near vectors to keep only vectors representative of enlarged motion classes; one vector of said reduced assembly of dominant vectors is then reassigned to each block, and the resulting field, after timed filtering, is used for the coding of the image by 'quad-tree' coding. The invention applies particularly to the formation of digital data for assisting the decoding in the limit of 1 Mbit/s.

Le procédé de segmentation de champ de mouvement selon l'invention consiste à former un champ de mouvement par blocs à partir de vecteurs mouvements affectés à des pixels d'image, puis à effectuer un traitement du champ de vecteurs par blocs pour extraire de ce champs un ensemble de vecteurs de mouvement dominants, par élimination des vecteurs proches, pour ne conserver que des représentants de classes de mouvement élargies; un vecteur de cet ensemble réduit de vecteurs dominants est alors ré-assigné à chaque bloc, et le champ résultant, après filtrage temporel, est utilisé pour le codage de l'image par codage 'quad-tree'. L'invention s'applique, notamment, à la constitution de données numériques d'assistance au décodage dans la limite de 1 Mbit/s.
