A low power management system including both hardware (Figure 2) and software (Figure 5) is provided for a battery powered portable computer (not shown). The low power management system powers down various sections (10, 12, 16, 21, 24) of the computer (DMA, VCO, DISPLAY, UART) when they are not used. The low power management system is controlled by a control program directing the microprocessor (40) (Figure 2) of the computer, and includes the capability to turn off clock signals (not shown) to the various sections of the computer based upon demand. Also included is the capability to turn on clock signals based upon demand. The low power management system also includes the capability to turn on the computer upon a press of a key on the computer keyboard. The low power management system monitors software application programs for keyboard activity so as to turn off the microprocessor in the computer in response to a loop (10, 16) looking for a keypress and certain other loops which can be monitored without use of the microprocessor.

Le système de gestion de faible puissance comprenant un matériel (Figure 2) et un logiciel (Figure 5) est destiné à un ordinateur portable alimenté par pile (non illustré). Le système de gestion de faible puissance sous-alimente diverses sections (10, 12, 16, 21, 24) de l'ordinateur (DMA, VCO, AFFICHAGE, UART) lorsqu'elles ne sont pas utilisées. Le système de gestion de faible puissance est commandé par un programme de commande qui dirige le microprocesseur (40) (Figure 2) de l'ordinateur, et comprend la fonction d'arrêter des signaux d'horloge (non illustré) allant aux diverses sections de l'ordinateur en fonction de la demande. Le système comprend également la capacité de transmission des signaux d'horloge en fonction de la demande. Le système de gestion de faible puissance comprend également la capacité de mettre en route l'ordinateur lorsqu'on appuie une touche sur le clavier de l'ordinateur. Le système de gestion de faible puissance contrôle les programmes d'application du logiciel pour l'activité par clavier de manière à arrêter le microprocesseur dans l'ordinateur en réponse à une boucle (10, 16) recherchant l'enfoncement d'une touche et à certaines autres boucles qui peuvent être contrôlées sans utiliser le microprocesseur.
