A method is provided for the photopromoted solid-catalyzed decomposition of oxides of nitrogen such as nitric oxide which are major pollutants of air and the environment at large. By this method, oxides of nitrogen (16) are decomposed into molecular nitrogen and molecular oxygen by reactive passage over a solid metal oxide catalyst (6) at an elevated temperature under irradiation (26) at wavelengths absorbable by the catalyst. In this manner, the major oxides of nitrogen pollutants originating in the exhaust gases produced by automobile engines, jet engines used in the propulsion of aircraft, gas-turbine power generators, and the combustion of fossil fuels generally are controlled and eliminated.

L'invention concerne un procédé de décomposition photostimulé à catalyse solide d'oxydes d'azote tels que de l'oxyde nitrique, constituant des polluants majeurs de l'air et de l'environnement au sens large. Ce procédé consiste à décomposer les oxydes d'azote (16) en azote moléculaire et en oxygène moléculaire par passage réactif sur un catalyseur d'oxyde métallique solide (6), à une température élevée, sous un rayonnement (26) dont les longueurs d'ondes sont absorbables par le catalyseur. De cette manière, on peut réguler et éliminer les principaux polluants d'oxydes d'azote provenant des gaz d'échappement produits par les moteurs automobiles, les réacteurs utilisés dans la propulsion d'avions, les groupes électrogènes à turbine à gaz, ainsi que la combustion de combustibles fossiles.
