There is disclosed synthesis of CH3OH from carbon monoxide and hydrogen using an extremely active homogeneous catalyst for methanol synthesis directly from synthesis gas. The catalyst operates preferably between 100-150°C and preferably at 100-150 psia synthesis gas to produce methanol. Use can be made of syngas mixtures which contain considerable quantities of other gases, such as nitrogen, methane or excess hydrogen. The catalyst is composed of two components: (a) a transition metal carbonyl complex and (b) an alkoxide component. In the simplest formulation, component (a) is a complex of nickel tetracarbonyl and component (b) is methoxide (CH3O-), both being dissolved in a methanol solvent system. The presence of a co-solvent such as p-dioxane, THF, polyalcohols, ethers, hydrocarbons, and crown ethers accelerates the methanol synthesis reaction.

L'invention se rapporte à la synthèse de CH3OH à partir de monoxyde de carbone et d'hydrogène, effectuée au moyen d'un catalyseur homogène extrêmement actif de synthèse du méthanol directement à partir de gaz de synthèse. Le catalyseur fonctionne de préférence à des températures comprises entre 100 et 150°C et avec une pression absolue des gaz de synthèse de 100-150 psi, pour produire le méthanol. On peut utiliser des mélanges de gaz synthétiques qui contiennent des quantités considérables d'autres gaz, tel que l'azote, du méthane ou un supplément d'hydrogène. Le catalyeur est composé de deux composants: (a) un complexe carbonyle d'un métal de transition et (b) un composant alkoxyde. Dans la composition la plus simple, le composant (a) est un complexe de tétracarbonyle de nickel et le composant (b) est un méthoxyde (CH3O-), les deux étant dissous dans un sytème de solvant du méthanol. La présence d'un solvant auxiliaire, tel que du p-dioxane, de THF, des polyalcools, des éthers, des hydrocarbures, et des éthers en couronne, accélère la reaction de synthèse du méthanol.
