A system and method for high resolution gas chromatography involves the use of fused silica open tubular capillary columns (33) having a conductive exterior coating and an arrangement for electrically coupling a power source (21) to the coating to effect direct resistive heating of column (33) while controlling the temperature thereof. The control of temperature is achieved by measuring the resistance of the coating, correlating such resistance with the temperature of column (33), and increasing or decreasing the electrical power supplied to the coating to effect the adjustment in column (33) temperature. Because of the low thermal mass of column (33) and the conductive coating, temperature changes can be readily effected thereby improving the speed of separation and reducing the time interval between resolution of successive samples. The compact nature and low power demands of the system allow it to be operated as a portable unit.

Un système et un procédé pour la chromatographie en phase gazeuse à haute résolution consistent à utiliser des colonnes capillaires tubulaires ouvertes en verre de silice (33) possédant un revêtement extérieur conducteur et un dispositif pour coupler électriquement une source de courant (21) au revêtement afin d'effectuer un chauffage direct par résistance de la colonne (33) tout en régulant sa température. La régulation de la température est réalisée par la mesure de la résistance du revêtement, la mise en corrélation de cette résistance avec la température de la colonne (33), et l'augmentation ou la diminution du courant électrique fourni au revêtement afin de procéder au réglage de la température de la colonne (33). En raison de la faible masse thermique de la colonne (33) et du revêtement conducteur, les modifications de température peuvent être aisément effectuées, ce qui permet d'améliorer la vitesse de séparation et de réduire l'intervalle de temps entre la résolution des échantillons successifs. La nature compacte et les faibles besoins énergétiques du système lui permettent d'être exploité sous forme d'unité portable.
