A method and apparatus to treat a surface of natural rock or artificial stone-like material (3) to give to the treated surface an attractive finish. A high temperature jet of plasma (2) and a high speed jet of cooling fluid (5) are projected onto the surface to be treated. The two jets are moved on the surface at a given speed with the jet of cooling fluid following that of plasma. The speed of movement is so selected that the high temperature plasma jet heats only a thin layer of rock or stone-like material. As the jet of cooling fluid follows the jet of plasma, it suddenly cools the thin layer just heated by the plasma jet to cause a thermal shock which bursts particles of rock or stone-like material at the surface thereof, and blows the so burst particles off the latter surface.

Le procédé et l'appareil décrits servent à traiter une surface en roche naturelle ou en matériau artificiel ressemblant à la pierre (3), de façon à conférer à la surface ainsi traitée un fini d'aspect plaisant. Un jet de plasma à haute température (2) et un jet de fluide réfrigérant à haute vitesse (5) sont projetés sur la surface à traiter. Les deux jets sont mus sur la surface à une v itesse donnée, le jet de fluide réfrigérant suivant le jet de plasma. La vitesse de mouvement est sélectionnée de sorte que le jet de plasma à haute température chauffe uniquement une mince couche de roche ou du matériau ressemblant à la pierre. Etant donné que le jet de fluide réfrigérant suit le jet de plasma, il refroidit brusquement la mince couche à peine chauffée par le jet de plasma, afin de produire un choc thermique qui fait éclater les particules de roche ou du matériau ressemblant à la pierre à leur surface, et éloigne de cette surface les particules éclatées en les soufflant.
