An instrument for and method of effectively dilating a stenotic region of a passageway of a portion of the living body, preferably the prostatic urethra, so as to relieve the symptoms associated with the stenosis. In the preferred system the tissue of at least selected portions of the prostate (172) are compressed (preferably with a balloon (8) inserted into the prostatic urethra so as to enhance hemostasis), and at least selected portions of the compressed tissue are denatured (preferably with a laser beam transmitted from within the passageway in selected radial directions) so that as the denatured tissue heals, the denatured tissue tends to shrink so as to effectively dilate the portions of the prostatic urethra. Ultrasonic transducers are used from within the prostatic urethra to image the tissue as it is denatured so as to monitor the procedure to insure proper exposure to the laser beam.

L'instrument et le procédé décrits servent à dilater efficacement la sténose d'un conduit d'une partie du corps d'un patient, telle que de préférence l'urètre prostatique, afin de soulager le patient des symptomes associés à la sténose. Dans le système préféré, les tissus d'au moins certaines parties sélectionnées de la prostate (172) sont comprimés (de préférence au moyen d'un ballon (8) introduit dans l'urètre prostatique pour accroître l'hémostase), et au moins certaines parties sélectionnées des tissus comprimés sont dénaturées (de préférence au moyen d'un rayon laser transmis depuis l'intérieur du conduit dans des directions radiales sélectionnées), de sorte que, au fur et à mesure qu'ils guérissent, les tissus dénaturés tendent à rétrécir, dilatant ainsi efficacement les parties de l'urètre prostatique. Des transducteurs ultrasonores sont utilisés depuis l'intérieur de l'urètre prostatique pour représenter en images les tissus pendant leur dénaturation, ce qui permet de contrôler le processus et d'assurer ainsi une exposition correcte au rayon laser.
