A mobile satellite communication system utilizes spread spectrum techniques to allow messages to be transmitted from a ground-based cenral station (20) to a number of essentially identical receiver terminals (32) through two or more relay satellites (28, 30) operating on the same downlink carrier frequency (f2) and covering the same geographic area. This arrangement allows the capacity of the system to be increased without the use of additional radio frequency spectrum on the downlink, and without reliance on directional tracking antennas at the receiving terminals. The system can also determine the positions of the receiver terminal (32) for navigational and tracking purposes.

Un système de communication par satellite mobile utilise des techniques à large spectre pour permettre la transmission de messages depuis une station centrale terrestre (20) vers plusieurs terminaux récepteurs essentiellement identiques (32) par l'intermédiaire de deux satellites relais ou d'avantage (28, 30) fonctionnant sur la même fréquence porteuse de liaisons descendantes (f2) et couvrant la même région géographique. Cet agencement permet d'augmenter la capacité du système sans l'utilisation d'un spectre haute fréquence supplémentaire sur la liaison descendante et sans dépendre d'antennes de poursuite directionnelle au niveau des terminaux récepteurs. Le système peut également déterminer les positions du terminal récepteur (32) à des fins de navigation et de poursuite.
