Abstract

An electroluminescent device comprises a semiconductor layer (4) in the form of a thin dense polymer film comprising at least one conjugated polymer, a first contact layer (5) in contact with a first surface of the semiconductor layer, and a second contact layer (3) in contact with a second surface of the semiconductor layer. The polymer film (4) of the semiconductor layer has a sufficiently low concentration of extrinsic charge carriers that on applying an electric field between the first and second contact layers across the semiconductor layer so as to render the second contact layer positive relative to the first contact layer charge carriers are injected into the semiconductor layer and radiation is emitted from the semiconductor layer. The polymer film can be poly(p-phenyenevinylene) [PPV] of formula (I) wherein the phenylene ring may optionally carry one or more substituents each independently selected from alkyl (preferably methyl), alkoxy (preferably methoxy or ethoxy), halogen (preferably chlorine or bromine) or nitro.

Le dispositif électroluminescent décrit comprend une couche semi-conductrice (4) ayant la forme d'un mince film polymère dense contenant au moins un polymère conjugué, une première couche de contact (5) en contact avec une première surface de la couche semi-conductrice, ainsi qu'une seconde couche de contact (3) en contact avec une seconde surface de la couche semi-conductrice. Le film polymère (4) de la couche semi-conductrice se caractérise par une concentration de porteurs de charge extrinsèques suffisamment basse pour que, lors de l'application d'un champ électrique entre les première et seconde couches de contact à travers la couche semi-conductrice dans le but de rendre la seconde couche de contact positive par rapport à la première couche de contact, des porteurs de charge soient injectés dans la couche semi-conductrice et un rayonnement soit émis depuis la couche semi-conductrice. Le film polymère peut être en poly (p-phénylène vinylène) [PPV], représenté par la formule (I) où la chaîne fermée de phénylène peut éventuellement porter un ou plusieurs substituants qui sont chacun choisis séparément parmi un alkyle (de préférence un méthyle), un alkoxy (de préférence un méthoxy) un halogène (de préférence un chlorure ou un bromure) ou un nitro.
