An image processing and display system employs a high speed image LAN (31) for transferring image data separate from control data. A general purpose LAN (21) carries graphics data and control data of the system. One more image display controller (25) than display monitor (23) is used to provide off-line processing of images prior to display of the images. An analog cross-bar switch (45) povides the necessary connections between image display controllers (25) and the display monitors (23) to provide the desired views of selected images. Images are initially provided to the system from an image archive in a compressed manner. The images are decompressed and held in a local cache (35). With respect to each word of image data, different bytes of the word are compressed by different compression schemes to optimize transfer time of image data. A method is employed for transparently sharing a high performance image archive processor among various workstations of display monitors (23).

Le système de traitement et d'affichage d'images décrit utilise un réseau local de transmission d'images haute vitesse (31) pour transférer les données d'images séparément des données de commandes. Un réseau local polyvalent (21) transporte les données graphiques et les données de commande du système. Une unité de commande d'affichage d'images supplémentaire (25) en plus des moniteurs d'affichage (23) est utilisée pour effectuer un traitement en différé des images avant leur affichage. Un commutateur à barres croisées analogique (45) établit les connexions nécessaires entre les unités de commande d'affichage d'images (25) et les moniteurs d'affichage (23) pour produire les vues désirées des images sélectionnées. Les images sont d'abord fournies au système depuis une unité d'archives d'images où elles sont stockées à l'état comprimé. Les images sont décomprimées et maintenues dans une antémémoire locale (35). En ce qui concerne chaque mot des données d'images, les différents multiplets du mot sont comprimés par différents codes de compression, de façon à optimiser le temps de transfert des données d'images.
