A nylon or metal filament (12) carrying uniformly spaced light-distinguishable scale markings (14) is moved, in taking a measurement, between a light source (16) and a photosensor (18) which reads the scale markings (14) directly and emits a single electrical pulse for each passing scale marking (14). The extent of movement of the filament (12) corresponds to the magnitude of the physical measurement being taken. Pulses from the photosensor (18) are received by a memory-chip-containing electronic processing counter (20) or calculator for counting, storage, calculation, conversion to appropriate measurement units, and a final reading of the measurement taken appears on a digital display (22). For length measurements, the apparatus is provided with a storage reel (26a) for the filament (12b) and a reversing switch (72) for rewinding or for reversing the counting element. A timing device (186), a spring-operated weighing scale (266), and a fluid-pressure-responsive member (256) attached to the filament (12) may be included in the apparatus to adapt it for measurements of weight, time, velocity, pressure, altitude and the like to be taken.

On déplace, en effectuant une mesure, un filament en nylon ou en métal (12) portant des repères d'échelle (14) photo-discernables et uniformément espacés, entre une source lumineuse (16) et un photodétecteur (18) qui fait une lecture directe des repères d'échelle (14) et émet une seule impulsion électrique pour chaque repère d'échelle lu. L'ampleur du déplacement du filament (12) correspond à l'ordre de grandeur de la mesure physique effectuée. Des impulsions provenant du photodétecteur (18) sont reçues par un compteur de traitement électronique (20) contenant une puce à mémoire, ou bien un calculateur permettant le comptage, le stockage, le calcul et la conversion dans les unités de mesures appropriées, et une valeur définitive de la mesure effectuée apparaît sur un affichage numérique (22). Pour des mesurages de longueur, l'appareil est équipé d'une bobine de stockage (26a) du filament (12b) et d'un inverseur (72) pour son rebobinage ou pour inverser le compteur. Un dispositif de chronométrage (186), un plateau de balance à ressort (266), et un élément (256) sensible à la pression d'un fluide fixés au filament (12) peuvent être inclus dans l'appareil afin de lui permettre d'effectuer des mesures de poids, temps, vitesse, pression, altitude et similaire.
