Abstract:
(EN) A liquid crystal display comprises a body of a nematic liquid crystal host material (1) which contains a pleochroic fluorescent dye and which is supertwisted. Parameters of the display are selected such that the display has a transmission wavelength spectrum which encompasses the emission spectrum of the fluorescent dye. In a backlit mode, the display operates in transmission and the light from an electroluminescent panel (11) excites the fluorescent dye in the liquid crystal. In high ambient light levels, the display operates in a reflective mode and the fluorescence is excited by ambient blue or ultraviolet light. The absorption and the fluorescence of the dye are anisotropic, so that switched segments appear dark. In unswitched regions of the display, however, the fluorescence is excited and gives a bright background to the display. Hence, the effect of the fluorophor is to improve the brightness of the display.
(FR) Un affichage à cristaux liquides comprend un corps en un matériau hôte à cristaux liquides nématiques (1) qui contient un colorant fluorescent pléochroîque et qui est supertorsadé. On choisit les paramètres de l'affichage afin qu'il ait un spectre de longueur d'onde de transmission qui englobe le spectre d'émission du colorant fluorescent. Dans un mode d'éclairage arrière, l'affichage fonctionne en transmission et la lumière provenant du panneau électroluminescent (11) excite le colorant fluorescent se trouvant dans le cristal liquide. A des niveau élevés de lumière d'ambiance, l'affichage fonctionne dans un mode réfléchissant et la fluorescence est excitée par la lumière bleue ou ultraviolette ambiante. L'absorption et la fluorescence du colorant sont anisotropes, de sorte que les segments commutés semblent sombres. Toutefois, dans les régions non commutées de l'affichage, la fluorescence est excitée et donne un fond clair à l'affichage. En conséquence, l'effet du fluorogène est d'améliorer la clarté de l'affichage.
