Abstract
(EN) A method for preparing cast composite materials of nonmetallic carbide particles in a metallic matrix, wherein the particles are roasted and then mixed into a molten metallic alloy to wet the molten metal to the particles, and the particles and metal are sheared past each other to promote wetting of the particles by the metal. The particles are roasted in air or other source of oxygen to remove the carbon from the near-surface region of the particles and to produce an oxide surface diffusion barrier, resulting in a reduction of carbide formation in the molten matrix. The mixing occurs while minimizing the introduction of gas into the mixture, and while minimizing the retention of gas at the particle-liquid interface. Mixing is done at a maximum temperature whereat the particles do not substantially chemically degrade in the molten metal during the time required for processing, and casting is done at a temperature sufficiently high that there is no solid metal present in the melt.
(FR) Procédé de préparation de matériaux composites coulés de particules de carbure non métallique dans une matrice métallique, selon lequel les particules sont grillées puis mélangées en un alliage métallique fondu pour mouiller les particules avec le métal en fusion, puis le métal et les particules sont cisaillés pour favoriser le mouillage des particules par le métal. Les particules sont grillées dans l'air ou une autre source d'oxygène pour éliminer le carbone de la région proche de la surface des particules et pour produire une barrière de diffusion d'oxyde, ce qui se traduit par une réduction de la formation de carbure dans la matrice en fusion. Le mélange a lieu tout en réduisant au minimum l'introduction de gaz dans le mélange, et également en réduisant au minimum la rétention de gaz au niveau de l'interface entre les particules et le liquide. Le mélange est effectué à une température maximum à laquelle les particules ne se dégradent pas chimiquement dans le métal en fusion pendant la période requise au traitement et le coulage est effectué à une température suffisamment élevée pour qu'il n'y ait pas de métal solide présent dans la coulée.
