In order to reduce smoke emission from diesel engines it is necessary that the necessary mixing of air and gasified fuel is completed prior to the main combustion. Furthermore, the emission of noise is also minimized by the fact that the increase in pressure during combustion is not greater, per angular degree of the crankshaft, than the maximum pressure increase during the compression stroke.

La réduction des émissions de fumée par les moteurs diesel présuppose que le mélange nécessaire d'air et de carburant gazéifié soit achevé avant la combustion principale. D'autre part, l'émission de bruit est également réduite au minimum par le fait que l'augmentation de pression pendant la combustion n'est pas supérieure, par degré d'angle de vilebrequin, à l'augmentation maximale de pression pendant la course de compression.
